Dear ECN,

Suddenly, you're faced with a tight time crisis. You have been recruiting madly for two months. Everything and everybody is in place. You can get on now with all those things that had been relegated to the back burner. Then! One of the chosen decides to become one of the un-chosen - and we have less than three weeks to get a replacement - Arctic schools start real early.

The race starts all over. Fortunately, our Schools Operations was already registered with Education Canada. With Christine's help I was able to get the process underway. As a first-timer I committed a couple of "oops!" errors. I forgot to actually activate the ad. Christina spotted that. And I genuinely thought that the box that said, 'Number of Positions' meant number of teaching positions in that school. Not how many positions did I want to fill! That produced a few interesting calls. People wanting one of the 12 positions I had available. Another, "oops!"

When the chalk settled (does anyone use chalkboards anymore?) we were able to short list four people, only one of whom was a person I had contacted from the possibilities on the Education Canada website. Among the 31 people who telephoned, faxed or e-mailed me I had shunted aside the ones who only wished to come north because they would fit in - they hated heat, or the ones who thought that they would fit in because they were hunters and the hunting was the main reason to be north.

For those interested in such things we had: NF 6; PEI 1; ON 5; SK 1; BC 5 and FL 1. There were three shopping phone calls, no name. There were five callers who didn't seem at all perturbed that we had filled the position anyway - we were still being contacted even after deactivating the ad. They sent their resumes. We actually filled the position twice, but the first person to whom we offered the position ultimately refused on the grounds that she wouldn't be able to DRIVE in the particular settlement. Although this is not actually the case - you can drive all over the place if you have a four wheeler or a snowmobile. And there is a road. To the dump, (usually nicknamed, K Mart). And another road. To the airport. Anyway, I let it go. The real difference between the top two applicants was basically one of attitude, though attitude is difficult to assess from a telephone interview.

We had four applicants with their PhD. A bit overpowering for grade 6 Inuit children but nice to have as applicants regardless.

The accepting applicant had contacted me the first day the ad was activated. Which is very reassuring. It's always nice to know that we are not just dangling unheeded in the electronic void. The ad certainly worked for us. Now I can get back to the back burners. Please......!

Dear ECN,

Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board first became aware of the Education Canada Network website in December of 2000 and decided to take advantage of the free six-month membership. Since that time, we have posted all jobs, teaching and non-teaching, which has produced very positive results. This was evidenced during our teacher recruitment for September 2001 - numerous applications were received from people who had seen our job postings at educationcanada.com. (The number of “hits” to our job postings is amazing!)

The educationcanada.com website is “user friendly” and ECN is constantly updating and modifying to best suit the needs of subscribers and job applicants alike. For all of the above reasons, the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board has decided to re- new its membership for the coming year.

Keep up the good work, ECN!
