Description of our Community and School:

Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninnuwug (formerly known as Big Trout Lake First Nation) is located approximately 377 air miles north of Thunder Bay, Ontario or 269 air miles north of Sioux Lookout, Ontario, accessible by air & winter road for at least two months from February March.

Our community is serviced by Wasaya Airways Ltd, 100% owned by 8 (now 10) First Nations in northwestern, Ontario, Big Trout Lake First Nation being one of them. Wasaya means rising sun and the 8 rays depicted represents the 8 First Nations owners. . Daily departures/arrivals to/from Sioux Lookout, Thunder Bay, and surrounding communities. Our community is an Ojibwa/Cree registered treaty Indian reserve with a population of around 1000 plus. Big Trout Lake is the largest lake in Northwestern Ontario, 32 miles long, 16 miles wide. The Education Authority has two boats with motors; two snow machines, a couple canoes, one large van for staff to use for recreation, leisure, camping, fishing, etc. School has 30 staff and enrolment is 260 from Junior Kindergarten to grade 11 with 14 class rooms (Elementary and Senior), computer room, resource room, science lab, home economics room, library, gymnasium and outdoor skating rink and every class has their own computers.

Our community has the following services, businesses, institutions, etc., a 24 hour on call Nursing Station, Police and Fire Stations, CIBC Bank, Arena, Band Community Hall, Band owned community store with Canada Post, a Chester Fried Chicken & Gas outlets, two privately owned variety/confectionary stores, a Telecommunications Centre housing a cable TV with 50 channels and High Speed Internet service is also available from the Telecom, plus two advertising channels, locally owned radio station with Wa Wa Tay Radio frequency. We also have a hotel with a restaurant, one local coffee shop, four churches (Anglican, Pentecostal, Full Gospel, and Christian Fellowship Assembly), 95% of homes have delivered/pickup water and sewer services. Some homes/buildings already have underground water lines. Most homes will have underground sewer lines summer of 2002.
