Attawapiskat First Nation Education Authority Info

Attawapiskat is a Mushkegowuk Cree speaking community on the western shore of the James Bay region of Ontario.

This progressive school board called, Attawapiskat First Nation Education Authority (AFNEA) invites you to join a community of professionals in this closest community to the DeBeers diamond development. We believe that joining our team will be a great step in your personal development, whether you are a recently retired, or just beginning your teaching career.

We offer school programs to nearly 600 students at both the elementary and secondary levels - from JK to secondary school graduation, plus some post-secondary programs. We also have a wellness program with fitness equipment for our staff.

The 2015-2016 salary grid runs from $50,551 (Minimum Category 2) to $83,610. (Maximum Category 4). Also available is a full range of benefits, including fully furnished subsidized housing accommodation.

Qualifications
You must have skills for teaching English as a second language.
You must become a member of the Ontario College of Teachers by August 15, 2009-(http://www.oct.ca/). This process can take up to 3 months.
You must also apply to the Qualifications Evaluation Council of Ontario for an evaluation certificate-(http://www.qeco.on.ca). This process can take up to 6 months.

A 2008-2009 Certificate of Qualification or a 2008-2009 Interim Certificate of Qualification must accompany ALL applications for QECO evaluation from the Ontario College of Teachers.

You also need 3 more things:
a) A Criminal Record Check certificate:
b) A test to determine exposure to tuberculosis
c) To arrange for your university to forward transcripts to AFNEA.

The only way into the community is by way of boat or plane during the fall, spring and summer. In the winter, a winter road is opened so that vehicles can travel to the neighbouring communities of Fort Albany, Kashechewan, and Moosonee/Moose Factory.

Goose and moose hunting, fishing and outdoor activities are still very important as the food sources of many families.
