The Meadow Lake Tribal Council Office of Education is a second-level support service that maintains and enhances Meadow Lake First Nations community-based education programs and learning opportunities. The program provides sustainable educational services to all Meadow Lake First Nations schools and students while working towards parity with Saskatchewan Learning’s provincial education system.
The Education program regularly meets with the education boards on the community, regional and provincial levels and also coordinates the educational psychologist program, which monitors special needs students.
Resources of this program include staff, various agencies and organizations and elders working together to determine the most productive direction for the region’s education programs to take. Focusing on community level concerns, the staff consists of a director, a superintendent, two educational psychologists and a secretary, all working to maintain the successful education services already in effect throughout the Meadow Lake First Nations communities. Specific mention goes to the educational psychologist program, which works directly with Meadow Lake First Nations schools and Indian and Northern Affairs Canada to address special needs students. The Meadow Lake Tribal Council’s two educational psychologists consult with parents, school staff, children and outside agencies to identify and address the special needs of individual students.
Supporting MLTC’s education activities are several organizations that enhance the Meadow Lake First Nations education system. Indian and Northern Affairs Canada is the sole source of education program funding and has representatives meet with the office of education to determine an appropriate budget for programs based on community needs. Local organizations like the Meadow Lake School Division and the Northern Lights School Division also work closely with MLTC Education to discuss concerns with the province’s education system. With the help of families, elders, and outside agencies, the education program strives to constantly improve and expand the potential of Meadow Lake First Nations students at every stage in their education.
